Your air conditioner runs on a refrigerant, and which one it uses tells you its age, its service cost, and how close it is to retirement. R-22 (Freon) is long discontinued and very expensive to service. R-410A stopped being manufactured in new systems in January 2025 — still fine to own and service, but its clock is ticking. Come in, come in — find your seats. If you've been with me through this series, you now know how air conditioning works, you can tell a condenser from an air handler from a coil, and you know why that air handler lives where it lives. Today, the final piece of the machine — and the strangest one. You cannot see it, you rarely think about it, and yet a few pounds of it are the entire reason your Florida home is bearable in August. I'm talking about refrigerant — the working fluid that pulls heat out of where you don't want it.
And here's what most people never realize: the same gas cooling your living room is cooling nearly everything else in modern life. The air conditioning in your car. The refrigerated trucks hauling your groceries down I-4. The cold-storage warehouses those trucks load from. The open cases at the supermarket keeping your milk and your ice cream. Pull refrigerant out of the world and civilization gets warm, spoiled, and miserable in about a day. So when the rules about refrigerant change — and they have, three times now — it ripples through everything, including the unit sitting outside your house. That history is quietly waiting inside your air conditioner right now, and it may cost you more than you'd guess.
👻 The First Ghost: Freon (R-22)
For decades, one refrigerant did most of that work: R-22, better known by the brand name Freon. It cooled homes, cars, supermarket cases, and warehouses alike for half a century. It worked beautifully. It had just one fatal flaw — it punched holes in the ozone layer. So the world agreed to phase it out.
Here's the part that matters to you: R-22 wasn't ripped out of anything overnight. It was simply no longer manufactured, and the existing supply began to dwindle. Every system kept running — but the gas to service them grew rarer and pricier every year. Today, reclaimed R-22 runs $50 to $150 a pound, and a single recharge on an old home system can cost $500 to $1,500 or more. If your home still runs on R-22, you're driving a car on a fuel they stopped making. It still goes — until the day it doesn't, and the repair bill makes the decision for you.
👻 The Second Ghost: R-410A (Puron)

R-22's replacement was R-410A, sold under names like Puron. It didn't harm the ozone, so for about twenty years it became the new standard. If your system was installed roughly between 2005 and 2024, this is almost certainly what's inside it.
But R-410A had its own problem — not ozone this time, but a very high global warming potential. And so history rhymed. As of January 1, 2025, manufacturers stopped building new systems that use it. R-410A isn't illegal — you can keep your system, run it, and service it for years yet, and contractors are even still allowed to install leftover systems built before the cutoff. But you can feel the pattern repeating: production stops, supply tightens, and over the coming decade, servicing an R-410A system will get more expensive, just as R-22 did before it.
👻 The New Ghosts: R-454B and R-32
Every new system installed today uses one of two next-generation refrigerants: R-454B or R-32. Both cool just as well, and both carry a fraction of the environmental cost. They come with one new wrinkle — they're classified as mildly flammable, which is why new equipment is built with different safety components. You can't simply pour these into an old R-410A system; the whole system has to be designed for them.
🕰️ Why a Professor Tells You This
Because the refrigerant inside your air conditioner is a clock. It tells you, roughly, how old your system is, what it will cost to keep alive, and how close it is to the end of its useful life. An R-22 system isn't just old — it's expensive to keep breathing. An R-410A system is fine today but on the far side of its own sunset. And knowing which one you own turns a surprise repair bill into a decision you get to make on your own terms.
🔎 What Your Inspector Looks For
This is where the lesson comes home. When Four Corners inspects your home's HVAC, we're reading that clock for you. We identify which refrigerant the system uses and note it in your report — often right off the data plate on the equipment. We record the system's age, because a 15-year-old R-22 unit and a 3-year-old R-454B unit are two very different financial futures. We check that the system is cooling properly, look for signs of refrigerant leaks and past repairs, and flag a system that's near the end of its service life so it doesn't become tomorrow's emergency.

Professor, do I have to replace my R-410A system?
No. If it's running well, run it. There's no law against owning or servicing one, and there won't be. The change only means new systems use the new gases — and that servicing yours will slowly cost more over the years ahead.
Mildly flammable? Should I be worried about the new refrigerant?
No more than you worry about the natural gas line to your stove. New A2L systems are engineered for it — leak sensors, redesigned components, updated installation standards. Millions are already running safely.
Can my AC company just put the new refrigerant in my old system?
No — and if someone offers to, be suspicious. The new refrigerants run at different pressures with different oils and safety requirements. The only path to R-454B or R-32 is equipment designed for it.
How do I find out which refrigerant I have?
Ah — that's your homework. Read on.

Walk outside to your condenser — the unit we met back in Lesson 2 — and find the metal data plate on its side. Look for the word "Refrigerant" and you'll see it: R-22, R-410A, R-454B, or R-32. That one label tells you more about your next five years of homeownership than most people ever bother to learn.
